Introduction to Confucius Institutes

Up to now, SISU(Sichuan International Studies University) has established Confucius Institutes at Lome University of Togo and Nizhniy Novgorod Language University of Russia.

The Confucius Institute at Lome University, located in the capital of Togo, remains to be the sole Confucius Institute of Togo ever since it was unveiled in 2009. During the past ten years, 4 Chinese deans have been sent out in succession. Mr. Gou Zhiguang, the first dean appointed there, was awarded the title of Advanced Individual for his outstanding contribution.  

Considering the various needs of local Chinese learners, the Confucius Institute at Lome University offers Chinese courses at different levels. In May 2018, the teaching center at Kara University was officially initiated by the very Confucius Institute. In 2019, the major of Chinese was officially approved by Lome University to enroll students and all courses involved are in the charge of the Confucius Institute.  

The Confucius Institute at Nizhniy Novgorod Language University, located in the city of Nizhniy Novgorod, Russia, was officially set up in 2011. Ever since its establishment, 2 Chinese deans have been appointed in succession.

Throughout the years, a great variety of Chinese courses have been opened in the institute,popular with locals ranging from college students, middle school students, primary school students to social enthusiasts. Meanwhile, Nizhniy Novgorod Language University also opens a major of Regional Studies, where Chinese is established as the first foreign language and the teaching of Chinese is in the charge of the Confucius Institute.

SISU always attaches great importance to the operation of its Confucius institutes abroad. Apart from joint establishment and management, it also enthusiastically encourages teachers and students to work in other Confucius institutes overseas.

Over the years, a number of teachers have been appointed to America, Germany, and Egypt to act as Chinese deans. Among them, Ms. Wang Wenqiu, once the Chinese dean of the Confucius Institute at University of Washington, was awarded the title of Advanced Individual of the Confucius Institute.

Every year an average of more than 40 student volunteers from SISU are sent abroad to work as Chinese teachers.In addition, SISU is also cooperating with colleges and universities of Indonesia and Thailand to build high-end local practice bases serving Asian talents of the Chinese language and culture.
